Lions Gate Beats Appeal in Producer’s Copyright Suit Over Show

An entertainment producer couldn’t convince a federal appeals panel Monday to revive her copyright suit alleging Lions Gate Entertainment Inc. copied her stage play for one of its TV shows.

Lions Gate’s summary judgment award from a lower court was affirmed by the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, according to an unpublished memorandum. The US District Court for the Central District of California said that the studio’s 2020 show “P-Valley” didn’t infringe on the copyrights Nicole Gilbert-Daniels holds from her musical stage play “Soul Kittens Cabaret.”
