LexisNexis’s Right-of-Publicity Settlement Wins Final Court Nod

LexisNexis will stop using the personal data of its Illinois users to market free trials of its products under a settlement for a “right of publicity” lawsuit given final approval in federal court.

The plaintiffs alleged that LexisNexis used their personally identifiable data without consent to market its background-check subscription services, according to an amended complaint filed in 2024 in the US District Court for the Central District of California. That use of their data violated the California Right of Publicity Act and the Illinois Right of Publicity Act, the complaint said.
