Long-Time Chicago Alderman Convicted in US Corruption Crackdown

Former Chicago Alderman Edward Burke (D) on Thursday was found guilty by a federal jury of racketeering and bribery, a major victory for the federal government in its continuing probe of pubic corruption in Illinois.

A jury of nine women and three men found Burke, who served as alderman from 1969 to 2023 and chaired the city council’s powerful finance committee, guilty of 13 counts of racketeering, bribery, unlawfully accepting property, attempted extortion, and interference with commerce by threat.
