The fee provision of Clearview AI’s settlement awarding the equivalent of nearly $52 million to a class that sued over the facial recognition company’s use of biometric data was approved by a federal judge.
Objectors represented by Public Citizen Litigation Group argued that the settlement—which gives the class a 23% equity stake in the company—effectively endorsed Clearview’s scraping and storing of billions of pictures from the internet to fuel its facial recognition business. They have filed an appeal to the Seventh Circuit, and have been asked to file a brief by June.
