Lawyer to Pay $2,500 in Sanctions Over AI-Written Brief

The Fifth Circuit has sanctioned an attorney for relying on artificial intelligence to write “a substantial portion, if not all” of a reply brief without verifying its accuracy.

Heather Hersh of Jaffer & Associates PLLC must pay $2,500 in sanctions to the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit within 30 days, the court said in a Wednesday opinion.

Jaffer & Associates represents Robert Fletcher, who sued Experian Information Solutions Inc. and Bridgecrest Credit Company LLC for identity theft under the Fair Crediting Reporting Act.
