- COURT: C.D. Cal.
- TRACK DOCKET: No. 8:22-cv-868 (Bloomberg Law subscription)
Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer Monday sued a woman who accused him of having rough sex with her against her will and the attorney who represented her for defamation and financial losses due to the fallout.
Lindsey Hill wanted to destroy Bauer’s reputation and baseball career, gain attention for herself, and get millions of dollars from Bauer, the complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California says. Her accusations—made in police reports, court documents, and a media campaign—were false and misleading, Bauer says.
The attorney who represented Hill throughout unsuccessful proceedings to obtain a domestic violence restraining order against Bauer, Niranjan Fred Thiagarajah, is also named as a defendant in the suit.
Bauer’s complaint admits that he had rough sex with Hill on two occasions, but says he never performed acts she hadn’t asked for or consented to.
Hill’s accusations led the Dodgers to put Bauer on administrative leave for the 2021 season, the complaint says. His leave has been continued through the 2022 season so far, it says.
Bauer has lost revenue from and opportunities for sponsorship deals, he says in the complaint. He didn’t specify the amount of damages he’s seeking.
Causes of Action: Defamation and tortious interference with contract and prospective economic advantage.
Relief: General and punitive damages, costs and attorney’s fees.
Response: Thiagarajah didn’t immediately respond to Bloomberg Law’s request for comment.
Attorneys: Kinsella Weitzman Iser Kump Holley LLP and Zuckerman Spaeder LLP represent Bauer.
The case is Bauer v. Hill, C.D. Cal., No. 8:22-cv-868, complaint filed 4/25/22.
