Kansas Telemedicine Abortion Ban Put on Hold by Trial Court

Pill-induced telemedicine abortions are legal in Kansas for now, after a state trial court put on hold a 2011 law that bans doctors from remotely overseeing patients taking the medication.

Shawnee County District Judge Teresa L. Watson reinstated claims against two Kansas officials and entered a preliminary injunction barring the state’s enforcement of the law pending further litigation.

Eighteen states currently prohibit the use of telemedicine for abortions, according to the Center for Reproductive Rights, which represents plaintiff Trust Women Foundation Inc. in the lawsuit. Trust Women operates a clinic in Wichita.
