A Cook County, Ill., judge declined to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the conduct of immigration agents in the Chicago area, rejecting a request from hundreds of petitioners who claimed State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke had abandoned her duties.
County prosecutors in Illinois don’t have the power to initiate broad investigations without the involvement of law enforcement agencies, said Judge Erica Reddick of the Criminal Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County. In light of that, there’s no evidence Burke abdicated her responsibilities, she said from the bench Thursday.
