Indiana University must expunge any disciplinary action taken against a group of protesters who responded in 2024 to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a federal court ruled.
The school’s August 2024 policy, which prohibited “expressive activity” on IU property between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., was unconstitutional because it created a “virtual ‘First Amendment Free Zone’” on IU property during those hours, said Senior Judge Richard L. Young of the US District Court for the District of Southern Indiana. In a partial win for the protesters, Young granted the protesters injunctive relief under the August policy.
