A freeze to grant funding for immigration-related nonprofits indefinitely has spurred a lawsuit from groups that say they rely on the funding to exist.
The groups say the Department of Homeland Security’s Citizenship and Integration Grant Program provides needed funding for lawful permanent residents—including to provide English language instruction and help with naturalization applications—but doesn’t encourage illegal immigration, as Secretary Kristi Noem has alleged. The nine nonprofit groups filed their suit Monday in the US District Court for the District of Maryland.
