Illinois Shipping Broker Beats $18 Million Accident Injury Award

A shipping broker will not have to pay any part of a $18.2 million jury award for injuries suffered by a teenager hit by a truck because the trucking company wasn’t its agent but instead an independent contractor, an Illinois appellate court ruled Wednesday.

A trial jury held carrier Dakota Lines Inc. was an agent of shipping broker Alliance Shippers Inc. when Dakota truck driver Gordon Lewis struck Gustavo Cornejo on the side of a road.
