A former Illinois attorney was found guilty on two counts of embezzlement, six counts of bankruptcy fraud, and eight counts of tax fraud following a nearly four week-long trial, federal prosecutors announced on Monday.
Robert Kowalski was accused of diverting more than $8 million from Washington Federal Bank for Savings, a Chicago bank where his close associate had connections. Kowalski was further accused of helping to falsify bank records and of recording false financial transactions to put real estate interests into his own name.
