Illinois AG Sues Florida Marketer for Electricity Sales Fraud

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul (D) Wednesday sued a Florida telemarketing firm for deceiving consumers into fraudulently paying more for their electricity.

The Illinois legislature deregulated the state’s energy market in 1997, allowing residents to purchase electricity from companies other than the state’s traditional, regulated energy utilities. Raoul alleged in his complaint that Holiday, Fla.-based Southeast Energy Consultants LLC contracted with electric companies to sell their services to Illinois residents using “fraudulent, unfair, and deceptive business practices.”
