ICE Special Prosecutor Effort ‘Frivolous,’ State’s Attorney Says

Appointing a special prosecutor to investigate abuses by federal immigration agents in Chicago would run contrary to state law, and the petition urging a judge to do so is “frivolous,” Cook County prosecutors said in a filing Tuesday.

“Illinois law simply does not permit prosecutors to initiate criminal investigations and bring prosecutions because the general public and elected officials would like them to,” State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke’s office said in its objection to the appointment of a special prosecutor.

Only law enforcement agencies can investigate federal agents, their filing says, and Burke has no actual conflict of interest ...
