iCanvas, Retailers Hit With IP Suit Over Biggie Smalls Products

The rightsholder of hip-hop artist Biggie Smalls’ intellectual property is suing an online art company and several major retailers for allegedly selling products that infringe on the late artist’s trademark rights.

Barron Claiborne, a photographer who took the iconic 1997 portrait of Biggie Smalls just three days before his passing, also alleges in the complaint filed Tuesday in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois that iCanvas Inc. and the retail giants violated federal copyright law by selling products that include his photo without authorization.
