The US Fish and Wildlife Service faces an environmental advocacy group’s suit aiming to force a determination on whether the common hippopotamus should be protected under the Endangered Species Act.

The United States is the top global importer of hippo parts and products, playing an outsized role in harming the common hippo, Humane Society International said in a complaint filed Tuesday in the US District Court for the District of Columbia.
