HP’s $18 Million Age Bias Deal With Workers Gets Initial Nod

HP Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. will pay up to $18 million to resolve litigation alleging the Silicon Valley companies disproportionately terminated older workers, in favor of younger, cheaper, replacements under a settlement preliminarily approved Thursday.

The settlement, if given final approval, would end a seven-year-old collective action alleging that when Hewlett-Packard Co. created a restructuring plan and spun off the companies it targeted workers over age 40 in violation of the federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the California Fair Employment and Housing Act.
