Honeywell Sued by General Counsel in China Over Age-Based Firing

Honeywell International Inc. violated US age discrimination law when it fired a former general counsel because she turned age 55, bogusly relying on China’s mandatory retirement law, according to a federal lawsuit filed Wednesday.

China doesn’t “apply its mandatory retirement age to foreign workers,” the US District Court for the Western District of North Carolina suit said. The termination came while the now former-counsel, Ji Li, was working for Honeywell International and Shanghai subsidiary Honeywell (China) Co. as vice president and general counsel for the Asia-Pacific region, serving both the aerospace division and corporate operations, the complaint said.
