High Court Rejects Real Estate Development Firm’s Bribery Appeal

The US Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear an appeal by real estate development firm Shen Zhen New World I LLC challenging its 2022 bribery convictions.

The firm, owned by Chinese billionaire fugitive Wei Huang, lavished city council member Jose Huizar with gifts for years in the hopes of converting the L.A. Grand Hotel into the city’s tallest skyscraper.

The petition asked whether a gift given to an official with the “hope or expectation” the official will be receptive to a later request for official action constitutes a bribe.
