Thomas Girardi, the disbarred California plaintiff’s attorney accused in a pair of indictments of stealing millions from his clients, will undergo a competency assessment to determine whether he’s fit to stand trial in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
“There is reasonable cause to believe” that Girardi may be “suffering from a mental disease or defect rendering him mentally incompetent to the extent that he is unable to understand the nature and consequences of the proceedings against him or to assist properly in his defense,” Judge Ronald A. Guzman said.
