Georgia High Court Affirms Legality of State’s Gun Carry Laws

Georgia’s restriction on when 18-to-20-year-olds can carry handguns in public doesn’t violate the state constitution, the Georgia Supreme Court said Wednesday.

The law is consistent with Article I, Section I, Paragraph VIII of the Georgia Constitution, which allows the general assembly “‘to prescribe the manner in which arms may be borne,’” Justice Andrew A. Pinson said for the court. Thomas Stephens didn’t offer “a compelling argument that the original public meaning of Paragraph VIII is meaningfully different from the construction developed through our Court’s consistent precedent addressing the language of that provision over more than a century,” Pinson said.
