Georgia County Sues for Damages From Golden Ray Shipwreck

Hyundai Glovis Co. and others failed to guarantee that a vessel carrying cars and trucks was stable and must be held liable for the subsequent shipwreck that caused extensive damages, a Georgia county told a federal court in the state.

The Golden Ray was carrying about 4,300 vehicles and 300,000 gallons of heavy bunker fuel when it capsized at St. Simons Sound in September 2019. The shipwreck was the largest in the coastal U.S. since Exxon Valdez in 1989, according to the lawsuit, and salvage operations caused multiple oil spills and fires.
