George Clinton Ex-Bandmate’s Copyright Suit Revived on Appeal

The Sixth Circuit on Wednesday revived a lawsuit by the estate of a former keyboardist George “Bernie” Worrell Jr. against funk legend George Clinton over hundreds of Parliament-Funkadelic recordings from 1969 to 1981.

Worrell’s estate provided sufficient evidence for copyright-ownership claims stemming from unpaid royalties to proceed, said Judge Karen Nelson Moore of the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. The case has a set of “highly unusual facts” and hinges on a 1976 recording contract that Clinton and his company allegedly had with Worrell, Moore said.
