GameStop, Bloomingdales Accused of Violating Privacy Rights (1)

GameStop Corp., Bloomingdale’s Inc., and BG Retail LLC were hit with lawsuits accusing their websites of violating Massachusetts consumers’ privacy rights by requiring customers to provide their email addresses when making a purchase.

The Massachusetts Consumer Privacy in Commercial Transactions Act prohibits businesses from requiring customers to provide personal information that’s not necessary for a credit card issuer to complete an online transaction, according to the complaint against GameStop filed in Massachusetts Superior Court, Suffolk County.

“There is no reason why a customer must provide their email addresses for a credit card transaction,” the complaint said.
