Gallaudet University won dismissal of defamation claims by four members of the Kappa Gamma fraternity over remarks by the school’s president that the fraternity was “the face of systemic racism,” after a federal court in Washington found the statement didn’t concern the individual members.
The suit, which also names Gallaudet President Roberta Cordano and the school’s Board of Trustees, failed because the challenged statements “are about Gallaudet’s Kappa Gamma chapter as a whole, not about any one member,” Judge Christopher R. Cooper of the US District Court for the District of Columbia said.
