Former UNC Business Professor Sues School for Bias, Retaliation

A former assistant professor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s business school has filed a suit alleging he was terminated in retaliation for his public criticism of the school’s discriminatory practices.

Larry Chavis contends his termination at the end of the 2023-24 academic year, after 18 years as a faculty member at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, was in retaliation for speaking out against the business school’s lack of faculty diversity, racially discriminatory hiring and compensation practices, according to his complaint filed Thursday with the US District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.
