Former Ben & Jerry’s Chair Sues Unilever for Defamatory Campaign

The former chair of Ben & Jerry’s independent board sued the ice cream maker’s parent company, Unilever PLC, for lodging defamatory statements against her ahead of her departure from the board last year.

The lawsuit from Anuradha Mittal, who first joined Ben & Jerry’s board in 2008, alleged Unilever engaged in a campaign to “vilify, denigrate and intimidate” her into voluntarily leaving the board. If she didn’t, the company would inform the public that she would be ousted for financial misconduct due to “investigations,” her complaint said.
