Florida Teen Social Media Limits Revived in Free Speech Lawsuit

Florida can enforce restrictions on minors’ use of social media, a federal appeals panel ruled in a decision tossing a lower court’s injunction.

Florida is likely to prevail in its defense of its law that bans minors under age 14 from Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat, and requires 14- and 15-year-olds to get affirmative parental consent before creating an account, the the Eleventh Circuit ruled Tuesday.

A two-judge majority reversed a trial court order from this summer blocking the law. They found Florida is likely to prevail over online companies’ First Amendment challenge.
