A Florida sheriff’s office denied in-person attorney visits to immigrants held at a Jacksonville-area county jail, a civil rights group argues in a lawsuit filed in federal court Monday.
The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Florida alleged that the Baker County Sheriff’s Office abused detained immigrants at its jail through physical assault, retaliation, and denial of medical treatment, and denied them in-person attorney visits without explanation, in violation of Immigration and Customs Enforcement standards and the US Constitution.
