A group of Florida Democrats want the state’s high court to order Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) to grant the legislators access to the state-run migrant detention facility dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.”
The lawmakers were denied access to the facility on July 3 when they arrived unannounced to see the conditions of the facility, a “blatant” violation of the state’s laws and Constitution that “threatens to erode the powers enumerated” to members of the legislature, state Rep. Anna Eskamani (D) and four other lawmakers asserted in a petition filed Thursday in Florida Supreme Court.
