New restrictions in Florida intended to make citizen ballot measures harder to organize and pass violate organizers’ First Amendment rights, a Medicaid expansion group claims in a federal lawsuit.

Two days after Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed HB 1205, the group Florida Decides HealthCare sued to block the law. The measure improperly restricts ballot access for state constitutional amendment groups through more stringent petition circulator eligibility, potential criminal penalties, and up to $50,000 fines for law violations, the complaint filed Sunday in the US District Court for the Northern District of Florida said.
