The Detroit Police Department agreed to change how it uses facial recognition technology as part of a settlement for a wrongful arrest and imprisonment lawsuit filed by a Black man.
Officers won’t be able to arrest people only based on results from the technology or on the outcome of showing witnesses photo lineups directly after a facial recognition search, according to a news release from the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan and other attorneys representing plaintiff Robert Williams in the federal suit.
