Extortion Trial of Ex-Union Leader, Nephew Ends in Jury Deadlock

The seven-day extortion trial of former Philadelphia union leader John Dougherty and his nephew, Gregory Fiocca, has ended in a mistrial after the jury found itself “hopelessly deadlocked” after less than a day.

Judge Jeffrey L. Schmehl of the US District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania entered the order April 26.

Prosecutors claimed that in 2019 Dougherty—then the business manager the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98—schemed to get Fiocca paid for a no-show, no-work gig.
