Ex-Habitat for Humanity CEO Sues Chapter Over Retaliatory Firing

The former CEO of a North Carolina chapter of Habitat for Humanity alleged in a lawsuit Wednesday that the organization discriminated against her and fired her after saying she wasn’t “woke enough” for the role.

Tiana Joyner says Habitat for Humanity Durham Inc. subjected her to race- and sex-based discrimination, illegal retaliation, and breached her contract in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and North Carolina public policy. Joyner also alleges the organization and its board chair Carleena V. Deonanan violated 42 U.S.C. § 1981.
