Ex-Detroit Nonprofit CFO Gets 19 Years for $40 Million Swindle

The former chief financial officer of a Detroit nonprofit was sentenced Thursday to 19 years in federal prison for stealing more than $40 million from his ex-employer.

Judge Susan K. DeClercq also ordered William A. Smith, the ex-CFO of Detroit Riverfront Conservancy Inc., to pay $44.3 million in restitution and to forfeit certain possessions, according to a news release from the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan. He was allowed to report to prison at a later date.
