A former Coupang Inc. attorney advanced some claims against the South Korean e-commerce company over his termination after he allegedly identified transactions with Iranian entities and pushed his supervisor to disclose them to the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Philip Smith, an experienced attorney with a specialization in financial crime compliance, can pursue his retaliation claim under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, Judge Richard A. Jones of the US District Court for the Western District of Washington held Tuesday.
Jones also kept alive Smith’s Washington state claim of wrongful termination in violation of public policy.
