A former Greenberg Traurig LLP lawyer who pleaded guilty in November to helping a wealthy client dodge US tax liability must pay $15.5 million in restitution to the IRS, a federal judge in White Plains, NY told defense counsel.
Prosecutors asked the US District Court for the Southern District of New York to order the restitution without a hearing on the calculation, saying Butselaar had agreed—subject to the court’s factual findings—that the tax loss was at least $25 million.
