El Paso School District Must Face Bias Suit Over School Closures

Families of Mexican American students will be able to proceed with a case alleging systemic discrimination on the basis of race by the El Paso Independent School District after it closed three elementary schools in a working-class neighborhood.

The group produced enough evidence to sufficiently establish a “genuine issue concerning every essential element of the case,” the US District Court for the Western District of Texas said Monday.

The families sued the district to reopen Beall, Alta Vista, and Burleson Elementary Schools and to make the local school district responsible for paying for necessary building and safety upgrades. Familias Unidas ...
