Drag Stars Win Event Permit in Bias Lawsuit Against Utah City

St. George, Utah, was ordered to permit a community drag show after a federal court found a substantial likelihood that its event moratorium was an unconstitutional restriction on protected speech.

Mitski Avalōx and the Southern Utah Drag Stars sued the city, city manager, mayor, council, and several council members when the drag organization was denied clearance to hold its event.

Drag Stars alleges the city used never-before-enforced municipal advertising rules to block its event, while exempting other violators from the same rules. The council also passed an event moratorium to stop processing new applications before denying Drag Stars’ request.
