Disgraced Attorney Girardi Loses Bid for Second Competency Exam

Disbarred California attorney Thomas V. Girardi will only need to undergo one examination to determine whether he is competent to stand trial in Illinois, a federal judge ruled Thursday from the bench.

Girardi was indicted for wire fraud and criminal contempt in Los Angeles and Chicago after allegedly misappropriating millions of dollars in client funds. Judge Ronald Guzman of the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois said the court will rely on a mental competency evaluation ordered in the separate California case and declined to grant Girardi’s request for a second one in Illinois.
