New York Aid-in-Dying Law Draws Suit by Disability Rights Groups

Disability rights groups have filed a lawsuit seeking to stop New York State from implementing what they call a “deadly and discriminatory” law allowing doctors to help terminally ill patients end their lives.

The law, which takes effect Aug. 5, violates federal disability rights laws and the federal and state constitutions that are intended to protect people with disabilities from discrimination, exclusion, and life-threatening state action, the organizations say in their complaint filed Thursday in the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
