A Michigan appeals court wiped out most of a judgment obtained a Detroit personal injury and civil rights law firm against a former office manager who admitted to using firm credit cards for personal purchases.
The judgment of more than $500,000 against former Marko Law PLLC employee Erin Salling included a $300,000 award—the estimated $100,000 it cost to investigate, multiplied by three. However, state law doesn’t allow for treble damages for such costs incurred by a harmed party through conversion, the Michigan Court of Appeals said Thursday as it reversed that portion of the judgment.
