Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) had the legal authority to oust an elected prosecutor in the Orlando area, the state high court ruled Thursday.
DeSantis alleged that State Attorney Monique Worrell (D), the progressive chief prosecutor for Orange and Osceola counties, had disregarded her duties through practices of jail-diversion programs that were allowing offenders awaiting trial to commit further crimes. He picked a conservative to replace Worrell following her suspension last year; Worrell sued, alleging that DeSantis’ executive order was unlawful because it was vague and breached her constitutional duties to exercise prosecutorial discretion.
