NYC Sheds Claims It Promised Retirees Medicare Coverage for Life

New York City isn’t required to provide a lifetime of supplemental Medicare health coverage to retired municipal employees and can switch retirees to a private plan, New York’s highest court ruled Wednesday.

Retirees who challenged the city’s decision to move to private plan “failed to establish” the city had made “a clear and unambiguous promise” to provide access to Medicare supplemental insurance, Court of Appeals Judge Shirley Troutman wrote in the court’s unanimous opinion.
