Cruz Staffer Tapped for US Attorney in Texas’ Southern District

Jan. 28, 2025, 5:57 PM UTC

Nicholas Ganjei, chief counsel to US Senator Ted Cruz (R), will be named interim US Attorney for the Southern District of Texas, people familiar with the decision told Bloomberg Law on Tuesday.

Ganjei will be the top prosecutor over a large swath of Texas’ southern border, enforcing immigration laws that Cruz and other congressional Republicans say are key to restoring order during the Trump administration.

Ganjei is expected to be sworn in this week. He didn’t immediately respond to request for comment Tuesday.

His arrival is part of a broader leadership overhaul in federal prosecutor offices in Trump’s second term.

Ganjei will replace Jennifer Lowery, a longtime prosecutor in the Southern District who has been serving as acting US attorney in recent days. Alamdar Hamdani, former President Joe Biden’s appointee for the office, resigned on Jan. 19.

Before joining Cruz’s office, Ganjei was acting US Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas.
