Criminal Justice Groups Challenge DOJ’s Grant Funding Freeze (2)

Criminal justice-focused nonprofits are suing the US Department of Justice over the termination of more than 370 grants used to aid violence reduction, victims’ services, and related programs worth more than $820 million.

The groups are bringing a proposed class action seeking an injunction to stop the DOJ Office of Justice Programs’ funding freeze, which began in April, when it ordered grantees to stop work “immediately.” The five plaintiff groups include the Brooklyn nonprofit Vera Institute of Justice, the Center for Children & Youth Justice in Seattle, and the San Francisco-based Chinese for Affirmative Action, according to the lawsuit filed ...
