County Jail Must Face Consent Decree, But Oversight is Loosened

A Mississippi county jail system must continue facing a consent decree with the Justice Department for violent and unconstitutional conditions but will have some of the edict relaxed, a federal appeals court said Thursday.

Hinds County, Mississippi’s board of supervisors were unable to convince the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit that a lower court should’ve terminated its consent decree with the US Department of Justice, according to an opinion.
