Councilors Downplay Massachusetts Court Pick’s Ties to Governor

Massachusetts Appeals Court Judge Gabrielle Wolohojian’s former romantic relationship with Gov. Maura Healey (D) didn’t appear to bother most of the elected officials that will vote on her nomination for a seat on the state Supreme Judicial Court.

The Governor’s Council, an eight-person body that approves judicial nominations, suggested Wolohojian’s 16 years of service on the state Appeals Court make her more than qualified for the state’s top court. But members of the public have expressed concerns about Wolohojian being potentially biased and needing to recuse herself on cases related to Healey’s administration, given their years-long relationship.
