Independent presidential candidate Cornel West is slated to appear on the November ballot in Michigan, following a judge’s weekend ruling and a state board’s decision Monday.
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s (D) office improperly disqualified West this month based on alleged defects in “affidavits of identity” he and vice president candidate Melina Abdullah submitted, Michigan Court of Claims Judge James Robert Redford said in an opinion Saturday. State law doesn’t require presidential and vice-presidential candidates to submit the affidavit, and any defects in the ones West and Abdullah turned in are therefore “irrelevant,” Redford ruled.
