Cop-Friendly Campaigning Gets Florida Judge 30-Day Suspension

A Florida trial judge is facing a 30-day suspension and public reprimand for campaign rhetoric supporting police, which the judge acknowledged crossed ethical lines.

Polk County Judge John B. Flynn campaigned in 2022 emphasizing his support of the police, and touted endorsements from local law enforcement officers. In court filings Tuesday he agreed that comment such as, “Criminals won’t be happy to see me on the bench,” went too far, and he agreed to the discipline.

“Statements such as these are clearly inconsistent with the impartiality, integrity and independence of the judiciary,” the Florida Judicial Qualifications Commission said in disciplinary ...
